Choate ranked among AmLaw’s Top 100 Pro Bono Firms
July 1, 2009
Choate was ranked 79th in The American Lawyer's list of “Top 100 pro bono firms.” The ranking methodology is based on both the average pro bono hours per lawyer and the percentage of lawyers who perform more than 20 hours of pro bono work.
The American Lawyer recognized Choate for its “Redirecting the School to Prison Pipeline” program, an initiative conducted in collaboration with the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law School and the Center for Law and Education. The program’s mission is to protect the educational rights of low-income, at-risk students by:
- representing students facing expulsions, suspensions and other school placement decisions resulting in their denial of a quality public education.
- identifing, monitoring and pursuing broader educational issues to be addressed systemically, including through litigation and administrative compliance complaints; and
- ultimately promoting legislative reforms aimed at eliminating denial of education as a response to challenging behavior and at improving educational opportunities and outcomes for students, particularly those from low-income families and communities.
For over a century, Choate has demonstrated its commitment to serving an active, leadership and generous role in the community. The firm provides pro bono services to clients with a wide range of needs through an equally wide range of organizations.
